Icthammol is a perfect base to make herbal and homeopathic ointments because it no longer has the smell and aggressiveness of raw petroleum and because it is a natural product. Petroleum is the residue from the distillation of raw petroleum after the gasoline, diesel oil, and machine oil have been removed. This is similar to the process of Vaseline.
