Biodynamics
Biodynamic Agriculture - What is it?
Biodynamic Agriculture is an understanding of how humans can assist Mother Earth (our soil) in continually creating and preserving its energy and activity of living organisms. When vitality and life is restored within our soils, our foods can then become literally "true food." This food has superior taste, long storage life and enhanced vitality which has been proven through European studies of comparison. This Biodynamic food has brought back the nourishment that food is capable of which Hippocrates spoke of when he said "Let Your Food Be Your Medicine".
How is it accomplished?
A Biodynamic farm is a self-sufficient closed eco-system. Soil fertility is built by the farmer who used Biodynamic composting practices. This is first done by selecting the best female organic cow manure. This manure combined with the unique Biodynamic Preparations produce the highest quality compost. Crop rotation along with green manuring also assists in re-energizing the soil. The natural growth processes are enhanced and evolved by these methods. Planting, cultivation and harvesting are all ecologically linked to the synergy of sunlight and the rhythmic, energetic influences of the moon, planets and stars. This process to energize and nourish our soils was first understood and introduced by Dr. Rudolf Steiner in 1924. Certification of Biodynamic farms started in the 1920's in Europe. It is regulated by the Demeter Association which is the oldest and most stringent organic certification authority in the world today.
